We tried..and we failed

I thought we were doing well preventing Ai-Vy from getting sick, especially with Ky-An getting better and she showed no signs. Unfortunately I was wrong. She started throwing up at 7 p.m. tonight and hasn't stop since. She threw up another 5 times and it's now only 10:30. It's so sad when I put her down to sleep and her mouth keep on opening looking for her bottle of milk. The poor thing is probably wondering why we won't give her the bottle tonight. I got so sad thinking how much she's going to suffer the next few days and how much work it's going to be to care for her that emotions overwhelmed me and I started to cry. I thought about how she depends on her bottles before naptime and now she can't even have them. She's not going to be able to sleep and I am not sure how to sneak water in her like we do with Ky-An. I hate the image of her laying exhausted and almost lifeless like how Ky-An has been. Ky-An can at least communicate with us but she won't be able to say anything at all. I get so sad thinking about all that.

Whenever the kids get really sick like this, all the images of what we went through with Lan Vy come spilling back to me. Because of these images, I end up scaring myself even more about their illness. I thought about what I would do if another child is taking away from me and I honestly don't think I am emotionally sound to handle it. Times like these remind me of all the trivial things that I took for granted such as them asking for their milk, eating and refusing to eat, their laughs, their playfulness, and their tantrums. At least with all these things they have the energy to do so and not lay there exhausted. I just pray and hope that the kids will be better soon.

Home sick with Daddy

Ky-An didn’t feel well and complain of his stomach hurting so we decided to keep him at home. Unfortunately I had a workshop to host and a meeting already scheduled so Hieu offered to stay home with the little man. Ky-An told us he wanted to see Dr. Y (our pediatrician) because he’s sick. I asked him why and he said “because Dr. Y makes me feel better"). I can’t argue with that logic.

Hieu said he was energetic and vibrant all day so you can’t even tell that anything is wrong with him. Hieu took him to the doctor and turns out he got an ear infection and put him on antibiotics. The pediatrician said he shouldn’t be so happy considering how bad he should be feeling. That’s my tough little guy :)

His little “I don’t feel good” frown:

What a sweet face…

Okay..I’ll try a little smile.

Daddy is too funny!

Mommy..where are you?

It's a brighter day!

Ai-Vy threw up a couple more times last night and keep stirring wanting her milk bottle. We put Pedialyte with some water into her bottle and give it to her. She drank it down and I had to yank it away from her fearing she'll drink too much and vomit again. The poor thing got mad and upset every time I yank the bottle from her. One time after I yank the bottle away from her, I put it next to my pillow. She screamed "MAAA MAAA" and look at me like "why are you doing this to me? I don't understand." and then reach over me putting her hand underneath my pillow trying to find the bottle. It breaks my heart having to deprive her the bottle but I didn't want her to get sick again. She finally went back to sleep. The next time she woke up and she would take her hand to clutch the bottle so I can't yank it away from her. It's so sad that I just let her finish out the Pedialyte/water bottle. She went back to sleep and I put a towel next to her laying there waiting for her to throw up. She never did but woke up at 5 a.m. and again chomping on her pacifier looking for the bottle. I asked Hieu to refill the Pedialyte and this time just follow my gut and let her finish the entire bottle. I figure if she really want it so bad then maybe she's not too nauseous. She went back to sleep and I again drape a towel across her. She miraculously slept until past 6 with no problem. She woke up with a dirty diaper and hungrily eat a lot of cereal afterward so I was encouraged. She saw some mac and cheese and wanted some so we cautiously gave it to her. She seem to hold down her solids just fine and we couldn't be happier.

By 10 a.m. she was getting crabby and we thought since she could hold down her solids as well as the macaroni and cheese so I braved it and give her the milk bottle she's been wanting. She greedily took it down as I keep a close eye on her. She was fine after the bottle and Hieu and I was just on cloud nine.

Ky-An slept through the whole night wonderfully except for some whimpering. He woke up asking for Pho, a Vietnamese noodle, and Hieu happily went out at 7 a.m. to find him some. He was so excited when Hieu came home with the food that Hieu and I were giddy. He hungrily ate some Pho with chicken and went about playing, almost running at times. It seems like he's well on his way back to being a little energetic happy boy we love.

Not the happiest Thanksgiving

This is the second worst Thanksgiving I've had (the first one was when we found out our maternal grandmother passed away in Vietnam and I didn't get a chance to come back and re-visit her). Thanksgiving day was great. It was my first time baking the turkey and cooking gravy and dressing by myself. I wasn't nervous because I know that my family would be fine no matter what. My sister and I ran to some CVS to run the Black Friday deals early in the morning. The ones around our house ran out of everything already so we decide to run to the CVSes near my work that is 30 minutes away. My sister drove and we got almost everything we need at the first one. The second one wouldn't take any printables and the manager is rude. We are beat after that and decide to drive home so I can start cooking. It's such a let down from last year's Black Friday at CVS. I guess we have too many competition in our city now and it's a pain. Last year I was virtually the only one shopping on Thursday at any of the CVS. I was even able to come back on Friday and still go stuff!

My turkey got done early so I had to re-heat it for dinner. Everything was great except my dressing recipe was a little mushy and my sister's fried turkey was a little raw at one part.

Friday morning Ky-An woke up and started throwing up (he didn't have any of the fried turkey). I t hought he was done so I decide to take him to Michaels with me to get some baskets. He threw up again before we got in the car but then he looked fine so I thought itw as over. Hieu gave me some bad directions to the store so I end up driving around for 45 minutes and Ky-An threw up again in his carseat. I thought I was almost to the store and my sister's nanny was in the backseat with him so I keep telling him to hold on and the poor guy was crying. (I know..bad mommy.) I pulled over and changed him then drove to Michael's. Hieu and my brother -in-law was nearby so they came by as we pulled up and took Ky-An home. He threw up throughout the day and could barely hold any water nor eat anything. We called the doctor and she said to just keep him hydrated and check to make sure he still has wet diapers, which he does.

It's so sad your child so sick. He's pretty tired from all the vomitting and just laid at one place and watch his cousins play. He could barely talk and is very clingy to Hieu. We got towels and several outfits ready for him for that night and he threw up twice. Once was my fault because his stomach was gurgling but he asked for milk and I was so excited he wanted something that I gave it to him. He threw up as soon as he drink it. He would only sleep on the glider with one of us holding him all weekend. I tried to put him down on the bed once and he keep stirring and coughing until he threw up.

Saturday was the second day he won't eat anything and we are getting worry. We called the on-call pediatrician again and she said to give him whatever he wants. It's bad advice I think because Hieu gave him some fruit rollups and he threw it right up. The pediatrician also told us that if he won't eat anything by this evening that we have to take him to the ER. I cooked up some broth and give/forces it into him in a syringe. He took a piece of cracker and is still drinking his water. He got upstet when he woke up from his nap and discover his cousins getting dressed to go out and he has to stay home. It's hard to see your child upset doing what you know is best for him,

That evening, I was getting desperate so I asked Hieu's brother to get Hieu some dinner and some tater tots for Ky-An. You should've seen the look on his face when he saw the tater tots. We were getting so excited because he's actually excited about seeing food. Everything looked so promising and he eagerly took one and put it in his mouth. Me and Hieu were grinning to each other and look at him full of hope. Unfortunately he stopped short after one and didn't want anymore.

I was hoping and praying all night that he would wake up hungry and is miraculously recovered but today is even more heartbreaking. He is extremely tired because he hasn't eat much in three days. You can actually see him got skinny and his face is pale. He just lays at one place all day and keep falling in and out of sleep. I was afraid he was lethargic so I asked Hieu to call the on-call pediatrician again. She informed us that it's normal for him to be exhausted since he hasn't eat for a couple of days. She told us to try and give him some more solid-typ food so this evening I was able to coax him to eat about 10 spoons of noodles. It was like Christmas came early for Hieu and I. He was also able to hold it down so it's promising.

We plan to keep him home tomorrow and monitor him to make sure he's really better.

An eventful trip to Dallas

We decide to drive to Arlington for Memorial Day weekend because we have some days off. We also had the bright idea of bringing my four-year-old nephew with us. We start off at about 10:30 in the morning. Ai-Vy was still sleeping but we had to go to get some lunch because Ky-An was getting hungry. We stopped off at a restaurant to feed them and hope they'll take a long nap in the car. As soon as we got on the freeway, Ky-An and my nephew, Ethan, conked out. Ai-Vy is bright-eyed from her previous nap.

Ky-An slept for about an hour and woke up and Ethan woke up an 30 minutes later. It was then movie time and Ai-Vy was ready for her nap. Everyone was fine and I was in the back tending to all of them. I was sitting in the middle row with Ai-Vy and the boys are in the backseat. I keep having to turn around and get out of my seat to check if they get enough/too much air. I then give them snacks, and then man the DVD player for them. I start seeing Hieu fidget so I asked him to pull over and I will drive. I warned him he will probably not get much rest in the back either because the kids will want something. He was in the back and was busy giving the boys snacks, toys, or water. Then Ai-Vy starts screaming because she wants her bottle. During this time Hieu was fidgeting with the air vents complain he's not getting enough air and starts breathing deeply.

Suddenly he turns pale an asked me to pull over as he quickly open the van door and lays down. He then tells me through clenched teeth to call the ambulance because he can't move his arms. I called 911 and tell them we are on the side of the highway; my husband can't breathe and can't move his arm. We also have 3 young kids in the car. I was amazingly calm during this time because my main concern is that I don't want to scare the kids. Thank goodness for our navigation unit because I was able to tell the 911 operator our exact coordinates. I asked Hieu to just concentrate on breathing while I stayed on the phone with operator. Within minutes, the color came back to his face and he felt better. The ambulance came at about 15-20 minutes and the boys were so good just sitting there watching their movie while Ai-Vy was occupied with a toy. They took Hieu to the ambulance to check him out and I felt bad that I couldn't go with him. I really wish I could be with him but my logic side took over and I realize I had to stay with the kids.

They told us that he was fine but they would like to take him to the hospital for further testing. That would mean Hieu is going to go off to a hospital at some strange city by himself while I took the kids to Arlington that is still over an hour away. I asked the EMS guy to watch the kids while I ran back to the ambulance to confer with my husband. Hieu said he felt good enough to go to our destination so off we went. The poor kids were in the car for over 5 hours by this time and Ai-Vy was screaming because she's hungry and wanted a bottle or her pacifier. Hieu was sitting in the front seat with me trying to rest and breathe while I was driving. I just kill me to hear her screaming and there is nothing I can do about it. I tried talking to her to calm her down but she was hungry. Hieu finally felt well enough to turn around and give her the pacifier which she immediately spit out because she wants her bottle.

My brother-in-law the met us on the freeway to take Hieu to the hospital in Dallas. It took me another 15 minutes to meet up with him and another 20 minutes to get to my sister's house. By this time all the kids are tired and Ai-Vy is still screaming. Hearing her scream just make the drive so much longer and stresses me out because I wanted so bad to tend to her. We finally got to the house and my sister helped me unload the stuff and feed the kids while I feed and put Ai-Vy to bed. She and I then bathe all 4 kids (her 2 daughters, Ky-An, and Ethan). Hieu and my brother-in-law were at the hospital for 6 hours while they run all the test and even did an MRI. They didn't get home until past midnight and the doctor diagnose him with an anxiety attack and hyperventilation.

The next day we were suppose to go to the mall but Hieu was too tired at the last minute so my sisters took Ky-An, Ethan, and her kids to Chuckee-Cheese. I stayed home to put Ai-Vy to bed because the poor dear was so tired from the night before. Hieu got some rest and felt like himself the next day so we went to Aquarium. I kept a watchful eye on him all weekend and he seem okay so I was confident enough to let him drive on the way back. It was such a scary experience and I am very thankful things worked out well in the end. I had to take two trips to the emergency room with Hieu as the patient but they were not as scary as this. I hope to never ever have to call 9-1-1 again in my lifetime.

The kiddos are sick..again!

Well I found out why Ai-Vy and Ky-An was torturing me at night. The poor babies are sick and have a slight fever. Ky-An caught it first but he seem to battle it okay. His fever was mild and it didn't keep him from being his active little self. Ai-Vy caught it a little worst and had a fever of 101. She was up most of the night because she wasn't feeling well so I stayed home with her on Wednesday. Poor Ky-An is also a little sick but couldn't stay home with me and was whining for me. I felt horrible about it but I know Ai-Vy would be demanding all day and that our babysitter would take good care of him. I always battle the biggest guilt trip whenever I am home but he has to go to the babysitter's....*sigh*.

Ai-Vy was suppose to go back the pediatrician for her second set of shots on Thursday but her fever climbed to 101 so they had her come in for a checkup instead. Her fever was down to 99 when we got there and they took a little blood to test if the infection is viral or bacterial. I was expecting her to scream whenever the prick her finger but she just calmly look at the nurse and then at her hand like "what's going on here?" The pediatrician showed me the result of the test and it's kind of neat. On the test it said what her white blood cell level is and what the normal range would be. If it's higher than the normal range then it confirms she is fighting an infection. They then break down whether those white blood cells are viral or bacterial and can tell what kind of infection she has from that. Luckily she only has a viral infection so no antibiotics! Yeah!

I had to battle to give her medicine the entire 3 days I stayed home with her. The doctor suggest suppositories but I am not too keen on the idea and wanted to use it as the last resort. I can't tell you how many times we had to change the sheets or her clothes these past few days though. This girl has the most sensitive gag reflex I've ever seen. As soon as the medicine touch her toungue, she gags and throws up. What I have to do was wait until she's in deep sleep and I armed myself with 2 dispensers (one of medicine and one of water). I would quickly inject the medicine to the back of her throat aiming the dispenser toward her cheeks so she won't choke. Before she has the chance to gag, I have to quickly inject the water in her mouth so she won't gag on the medicine taste. Even this process is not full-proof. I just hope she gets better soon. It's so hard to see your baby being sick and has that glazed look in her eyes.

Kids are sick...again

Ky-An has had some ailments lately. Last week he had a bad case of diahrea that caused a rash on his behind. It's really sad because he'll wake up several times the first night. He walke up, cries and goes "poo poo poo poo" and I'll have to get up to change him. His rash really hurts him when I wipe and he'll cry and wiggle. It's very heartbreaking. It's even worst now that he learns how to talk because he'll cry when I wipe and goes "owie owie, done done". I have to just do it really quick knowing it hurt him and then put his diaper back on. Everytime he cries it just pain us because there's really nothing we can do for him. He did it several times that night and I thought he's better the next day so I sent him off to the babysitters. I felt extremely bad that I did because he had to change diapers a couple more times that day and the babysitter doesn't know how to do it so he can be as comfortable as possible. It's not her fault because at times like this is when he needs his mom and I wasn't there. I feel like I had failed him.

He was better over the weekend and he was drinking and eating okay so we figure it might just be a stomach virus. A few days later he came home with a rash all over his body! It doesn't seem to bother him and he wasn't scratching or anything, it just looked bad and it was all over his face also. We put some Aveeno an he seem okay with it, just all blotchy. I thought it might be the new type of Triaminic I gave him so we stopped that. He still has a rash the next day but we are not sure if it's from the residual of the medicine or if he has hives because of the weather. He got better and we many never know what really caused it.

Now he's down with a cold and with this awful weather we are having, no wonder the kids are sick. It keep getting up to the 80's then back to 40's by the evening and the next day it'll be warm again. That's the crazy Houston weather for you and the poor kids are suffering because of it. Ky-An caught the cold first and then it's Hieu and Ai-Vy. Poor Ky-An can't breathe at night and keep on stirring to find a good position. He's also coughing a lot at night so I had to put him on my pillow that's a bit higher and give him the prescription cough medicine so he can get some rest.

It's much sadder for Ai-Vy, to see her being stuffy and sick but there's not much you can do. Everytime she coughs, she'll look at me for help. It's truly really sad. I really admire parents with continually sick kids. I just don't know how they where they get the strength. Because Ai-Vy is coughing and congested, she's been throwing up a lot also. I think one night she went through the whole load of laundry.

I kept her home Monday with me and she slept most of the day. It's a good thing too because I had so much work and worked most of the day. Poor thing, it must be because she was so congested and coughing so much at night. She didn't get better by Tuesday so I took her to see the doctor just in case. I just want to make sure she's not developing bronchitis, pneumonia, or any kid of infection. Luckily our pediatrician agreed with me and encourage us to take our kids in whenever we want to make sure of something. I was really happy to know she was fine and it was just a cold. She now weighs 18 pounds 5 ounces.

I am so behind!

I thought it was because Ai-Vy was sick and congested that she cried non-stop and I had to hold her all day and all night, but she's been doing that even though she's all better. I am so busy with her that I am behind on everything else and it's getting overwhelming. I feel like I am trying so hard just to stay afloat but am not suceeding. At times I am so overwhelmed I feel like I am drowning and want to cry. I have 3 load of laundry that needs to be folded and are still on the couch. Our laundry is also pilng up and need to be washed. My coupons hasn't been clipped since the end of September and it saddens me. I have a huge stack on my desk and I am not sure when I will be able to get to it. Let's not even talk about chores and cooking. Thank goodness we have cleaners who come to help me keep my sanity. I've been barely able to keep up with my blog let alone keep up with anyone else's. I feel so bad that I haven't been able to read anyone else's blog and keep up with their lives. If you are reading this, sorry gals!

I haven't been able to spend much time with Ky-An either and I miss him so much. He wakes up at 6 in the morning and Hieu quickly scoop him out of the room so he won't wake-up Ai-Vy. I am too tired to go out to play with him so I went back to sleep with Ai-Vy. He left for the babysitter at 7a.m. and Ai-Vy wakes up at about 7:30a.m. She then fuss for the whole day and when I got her to sleep, she pops right back up as soon as I put her down. She cry so I feed her, then she cry in the middle of feeding so I burp her, still cries so I change her diaper, cry again so I feed her some more, cry again and I just put her to sleep. I put her down and she wakes right back up and the process starts all over again. I end up holding her the whole day with no time for anything else. I am also struggling to nurse her during the day when she's fussy. When she wants her milk, my letdown is not quick enough for her so I just end up pumping and give her the bottle. She seem to take it fine when she's drowsy or at nighttime.

Ky-An comes home at about 6p.m. and I am usually trying to put Ai-Vy to sleep in the room at this time. Then I took her out of the room at about 7p.m. so Hieu can give Ky-An a bath. If I am lucky then Ai-Vy will stay down and I can put Ky-An to sleep. Most days I am stll holding her or working with her and Hieu puts him to sleep so I end up not seeing Ky-An all day. It really suck because I miss him so much and the most I see him is in the weekend when Hieu's home to watch him. Then I can have a few stolen moments with my son after I get Ai-Vy to sleep or calm down.

I tell myself I need to wake up in the morning to spend some time with him before he goes to the babysitter's but Ai-Vy end up being fussy the night before or she wakes up every hour that I end up being tired and can't get up. I hate myself every morning when I wake up and he's gone. I can't even have him home with me in the morning anymore because Ai-Vy is so fuss that he ends up being ignored and I feel so bad. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the time with baby girl and love her to pieces. I just wish I get more time with my baby son also.

Ai-Vy's first cold

I had to take Ai-Vy to the doctor today. Her head was hot the night before but didn't have a fever. Her temperature was 99.4 to 99.6. Fevers for infant is 100.5 and above. However, I decide to take her to the doctor anyway just for my ease of mind. I want to make sure she's not developing an ear infection, yeast infection, nor UTI. My family was here over the weekend and my oldest sister plus her kids are sick so I am sure she probably caught it from them. I knew they were sick before they came but I didn't want to stop her from coming since I love seeing them and so does Ky-An.

Ai-Vy is now 11 lbs, 7 oz. The doctor said her lungs, heart, throat, and ears are all healthy. She just has her first cold and just to monitor her. If she gets a fever then give Tylenol otherwise be conservative with any kind of medication. I feel the same so that's good. She has some congestion so I'll give her saline drops and turn on the humidifer if it gets bad. Poor kid, I hate it when they are sick! She was drowsy the whole day today because of her fever and barely eat. I hope she gets better soon!
